What is Surrogacy?

Surrogacy is an arranged pregnancy using a surrogate mother and any combination of the intended parents’ or a donor’s genetic materials. An embryo is created via in vitro fertilization, which is then transferred to the surrogate mother.

American Surrogacy specializes in gestational surrogacy, meaning the surrogate mother’s egg isn’t used and thus is never the biological mother of the child.

How Does the Surrogacy Process Work?

While there are many similarities between the adoption and surrogacy processes, there are of course some key differences.

First, both prospective intended parents and surrogate mothers must each pass their own extensive screening processes. American Surrogacy requires intended parents to pass criminal and child abuse background checks, and to complete an in-home assessment to help ensure they are indeed prepared for surrogacy and parenthood. Prospective surrogate mothers must also pass an in-home assessment, as well as multiple background checks, a psychological screening, a medical screening, and American Surrogacy’s own screening process.

The next step is finding a surrogate mother. American Surrogacy will help you create your Intended Parent Profile and will show it to our waiting surrogate mothers, who’ve already been approved and entered into our program. If a surrogate mother shows interest in your family, we will present you with her profile to see if interest is reciprocated. Once approved by each party, a match is made and the legal process of drafting contracts will begin.

After the contracts are signed, the medical process will begin soon afterwards. The surrogate mother will be given fertility hormones to prepare herself for pregnancy and to synchronize the intended mother or donor’s fertility cycles. When the time comes, the intended mother or donor’s egg will be fertilized by the intended father or donor’s sperm to create an embryo, which will generally incubate for 2-5 days until transferred to the surrogate mother.

During this process, a pre-birth order will have already been drafted by the intended parents’ attorney and approved by the court. The pre-birth order will establish legal parentage of the child, allowing the intended parents to make medical and insurance decisions and directs the state’s vital records department to include their names on the birth certificate.

How Much Does Surrogacy Cost?

The cost of surrogacy can vary greatly, depending on the number of embryo transfers required, the experience of the surrogate mother, and many other factors. How Does Surrogacy Differ from Adoption?

There are countless differences (and similarities) between surrogacy and adoption, but the most important differences for people considering surrogacy to understand include:

• the pregnancy is planned rather than unplanned
• one or both intended parents may be the biological parents of their child
• the surrogate mother is not related to the child
• surrogate mothers are compensated with moneys to spend how they wish
• intended parents play a role in choosing their surrogate mother
• contracts determine how the intended parent-surrogate mother relationship will work prior to the embryo transfer process
